Stoneycliff Wood Access Improvements, Wakefield

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) asked us to deliver a programme of access improvements through a semi-ancient woodland which, although it had no vehicular access, included a large network of criss-crossing footpaths.

For longevity, recycled plastic was chosen to construct the new large section of stepped boardwalk, boardwalk extensions and a small footbridge. We worked with YWT volunteers, who helped carry the materials to each area of the wood we were working in, which also helped to keep project costs down.

In a particularly remote location in the wood, a long way from the nearest road, surface water flows over the footpath. It was too far to carry materials to so we suggested cutting our own timber on-site. With our portable milling machine and an oak log that had been felled for safety reasons nearby, we cut the timber required to build a culvert to divert the water under the footpath.
